Cake Decorating With Fondarific

Last September 25, I joined a group of homemakers and baking enthusiast at The Cookery in Kensington Place, BGC for an afternoon of fondant adventure. Fondarific and LorAnn products were used thanks to Bake Essence.

I've had some very basic cake and cupcake decoration know-how but I haven't really had any formal baking training. All I knew, I learned from my mother, aunts, and cousins. So joining this cake decorating lesson is a novelty for me. Also, I am excited to meet and trade baking secrets with my fellow moms and baking enthusiast.

The kitchen looks so quiet and peaceful. I guess its nice to have a quiet time in the kitchen before the "action" begins.

The products. Fondarific Vanilla Fondant. This is yummy! I love fondants that taste edible.

The colored chocolates (easy-to-melt) and the flavorings. I love the coffee and rum essence.

Listening to Chef's instructions on how to roll and apply the fondant.

We were grouped into two's and given a round and a square cake to work with. We're to decorate the cakes with whatever comes to our minds. A test of creativity. The buttercream was applied all over the cakes so that the fondant will stick to it. Think glue + paper. ;)

So we happily molded our fondants, and applied the buttercream. But now, it was not an easy task! You need to handle everything with tender loving care especially the fondant. You need to knead it rightly, without any bumps (or air pockets), then apply the flattened fondant on the cake. Not easy, believe me. I was really getting frustrated with the fondant. Also, its hard to think of a decoration for my cake since the only fondant color that I got was brown and creme.

But the Girl Scout in me, won. I mean, I've been a girl for about six years so giving up is not an option. I persevered and was happy to have finished this checker-board cake. It took me forever and a lot of patience to apply each tile on the cake. But I'm happy to present this cake even if the tiles are crookedly placed because its my work and I put my heart into it.

And another last minute creation. This one looks nicer and easier to do than the checker-board.

The cakes that we made. :)

And after the class ended, I am now armed with tips and know-how when it comes to cake decoration.

1. Think about a theme for your decoration
2. Choose what colors to work with
3. Have some baking tools ready such as cookie cutters, rolling pins, etc

Also, since Fondarific is easy to apply, I'm sure daughter will enjoy making her own creation. I will just buy a ready-made plain cake or bake one if I have time, get some colored fondarific fondants and then its bonding time for us.

This is also a nice gift suggestion for our love ones this Christmas Season. A personalized cake decorated with love and cheers!
