Breakfast at Khmer Taste

Our hotel in Siem Reap is just a few minutes walk to Pub Street and the Old Market so you can just imagine the restaurants, food carts, food vendors that we pass by every day. And eating seem to be a daunting task especially with all the food choices- from traditional Khmer cuisine, burgers, pizza, grilled food, and exotic ones such as grilled tarantulas, snakes, etc.

But one restaurant that captured our hearts (or tummy) is Khmer Taste because we ate there twice. We didn't really plan to eat there but since we were scouting for a reasonably priced laundry service (that's another story), we end up eating at Khmer Taste which was like 3 stores away. 

Food was so good, that we decided to eat breakfast there the following morning (Stay tuned for our Khmer Taste dinner). 

I'm not really a breakfast person so I just ordered sunny side-up + baguette + sweet Cambodia  coffee which costs me $1.75. My friebd had the scrambled eggs plus coffee which is basically the same amount. 

The bread was freshly made and warmed to perfection, crusty and soft at the same time. Perfect with butter. The coffee also tasted great and my only complaint was that the cup was small so you need to order another one if its not enough for you. 

Another hightlight at Khmer Taste aside from the food is its fish spa which costs only $1 for unlimited time. This fish spa is way, way cheaper than the ones near Pub Street and has a time limit. 

To sum it up, Khmer Taste is a great restaurant, a reasonably priced one that serves good food.

2014 Best Restaurant And Food Discoveries

As a foodie, its really hard for me to list down my favorite food or restaurant as I want to be adventurous when it comes to food and discovering new food places. So after some careful introspection, here's my list of 2014 Best Restaurant and Food Discoveries.

A nice beginning to discover a new dish last January 2014 - I immediately fell in-love with the Truffle Gorgonzola Pasta at Kettle. Kettle is still a relatively new restaurant last year but it has already attracted a lot of loyal patrons because of the good food that they serve. It was really a toss between the pasta and Kettle's famous Buttermilk Fried Chicken.

SIEM REAP: Blue Pumpkin

My friend and I discovered Blue Pumpkin during our first foray in the busy streets of Siem Reap. The first branch that we saw was a few steps away from the Old Market. This boulangerie is popular in Siem Reap as it has numerous branches including the one at the airport. The prices are reasonable and way cheaper than the ones here in Manila (seriously).

SIEM REAP: Midnight Dinner

Because we arrived late and rested for a while at the hotel, it was almost midnight when we went out for dinner. Of course, most restaurants are closed by then so we ended up eating noodles in one of the numerous "carinderia" on-wheels along the street near Pub Street and the Night Market area. 

I ordered beef noodle soup which is similar to the Vietnamese pho. Broth was very flavorful and tastes refreshing because of the herbs. It also has tons of holy basil and tamyao which I really liked. This costs USD$2. I washed it down with bottled water bought from the convenience store nearby. A liter of bottled water is worth $2.

Siem Reap: Golden Coconut Restaurant

Dining in Siem Reap is a heaven for foodies since prices are relatively cheap and portions are generous even if they say that the food you order is good for only one person. Price range are between $1  to $3. But there are also restaurants that's a bit pricey with meals that costs $4-9. Of course, if you dine at the posh hotels, be ready to shell out more dollars. ;) Also, currency used in Siem Reap is U.S. dollars so always have some $1s and $5s. Change given is in dollars also except when you have change for $.25 or $.50, then they will give you change in riel (khr).
