Latest Food Finds and Steak Night
I have this habit of checking the grocery or the market or the internet for new munchies or new restaurants and most often than not, I discover new treats. I also listen attentively to family and friends whenever they mention something about a particular dish, native delicacy, etc. So I welcome the days when I find some interesting discoveries.
Nova Veggie Good. I haven't eaten Nova chips for quite some time now because hubby and daughter doesn't really like it. But I have this sentimental fondness for it because it was my mother's favorite. I remember buying her a pack or two whenever she visited us before. That was multi-grain Nova if I'm not mistaken. So fast forward to yesterday, Sunday. While doing my weekly grocery, I saw this blue vision and instantly fell in love with the packaging. Yes, I love the packaging. The color stands out amidst a sea of red, green and yellow packaging.
Judgment time. Marty's Vegetarian Chicharon came to mind. Same texture but different taste. While Marty's tends to be flavorful, Nova's Veggie good is a bit on the bland side. Less salt, zero calories effect. Can't say its love at first bite. I'm not even sure if I'll give it another go. Hmmm ...
Frozen Strawberry by SM Bonus. The 500g pack costs only P65 so that's a plus point. I was just checking the frozen veggies when I saw the strawberries. I'm dreaming of strawberry shake or strawberry ice-cream. What would it be?
Shank Steak. Bought the beef shank from Rustan's because of the B1T1 promo. But I was a bit hesitant because shank can be a bit hard to chew sometimes. Luckily, it didn't turn out that way. I marinaded the shanks in kalamansi, rice wine, olive oil, dried basil, dried rosemary, fleur de sel's peppercorn and salt mix, and cilantro for about 3 hours. Then its grilling time. We paired these with buttered vegetables and gravy. Yum yum yum!
Dinner with Fr. Jacob Gnalian
I've first heard about Fr. Jacob last year when hubby attended the Ayurvedic Convention at the Daughter's of St. Paul Auditorium in Pasay. Since we've been into holistic medicine and food cures for quite some time now, he was eager to attend and learn more about Ayurveda.
"Ayurveda- Science of Life- is an ancient Indian Medicinal science aimed at the prevention and cure of illness, through the fundamental balance of the principles (Vata, Pitha, Kapha) in living beings as a whole body, mind, and spirit. In other words, empower the individual to attain and sustain balance within him/herself-body, mind and spirit through restoring harmony with Nature."
Hubby's been drinking Ayurveda Tea since then. Sometimes, daughter drinks the tea also. As for me, I prefer making my own kefir drink. ;)
That's a photo of Fr. Jacob showing me a Banaba plant in his garden. I was lucky to arrive half an hour early and spent some time checking the plants in the garden. Yes, I love plants, especially the medicinal ones. Going back to banaba, Fr. Jacob explained that it is good for treating diabetes and other illnesses when combined with other plants. Sometimes the leaves are used, or the bark or the roots, or the flowers. Fr. Jacob also mentioned that I can go back to visit his garden and ask questions. Woohoo!
Fr. Jacob explaining Ayurveda and the benefits of natural medicine compared with western medicine.
Afterwards, we were treated to an Indian dinner.
This is curried vegetables. It looks like an Indian version of pinakbet except that it has curry sauce. Good but spicy!
I forgot to ask the name of this pancake-like goodness. Alas, another spicy dish. Water please!
Chapati. So good! You dip it in the curry sauce. Think pita bread.
Chicken. Didn't taste this but I know its delish. :)
Pink Tea. Looks so cute! Been busy eating and chatting with new friends to ask Fr. Jacob about the tea's ingredients and why it turned pink.

Kare!
On a recent trip to Pasay, I bought some interesting curry paste from Darumaya. I was supposed to get a nice box with nicely written Japanese characters but was told by the sales clerk that its too spicy so I got the kiddie version, the one with the anime characters. Also, daughter loves curry!
This is so easy to make. Boil the lamb (or preferred meat) until tender. Add cube potatoes and carrots and bay leaf. Pour in the paste and add just the right amount of water or broth. Yum!
